Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
